We had a blast at Club XYZ, whose 20th anniversary is a joyful standout | Opinion

A year anniversary is an memorable feat in business. For a gay bar like Club XYZ in Knoxville, it's unusual.

This story, admittedly, landed in our lap. The owner reached out after reading an unrelated business anniversary piece, a type of story that works for any type of establishment or institution with a major milestone. You view them all the time.

But as Knox News reporter Keenan Thomas began meeting more people, reading more stories and digging into the history of gay bars in America, it was evident: Club XYZ isn't just any business. It's a happy, hollerin' Knoxville institution and a haven for LGBTQ+ communities that acquire been pushed to the margins for decades.

Go behind the scenes with Keenan in this Q&A that explains how the story came together, what he learned along the way and why Club XYZ "is for everybody."

In the international LGBTQ Magazine The Advocate listed Knoxville as the 8th Gayest City in America during its countdown of places to dwell or visit in the USA. I've been telling everyone how much I love Writer's Block, so I mind it was time to write a here: Even though it's a cocktail bar, it has a chill non-pretentious vibe. It's small and relatively peaceful, so it makes the perfect date spot, because you can actually hold a conversation. Downstairs is a tiny bar, while upstairs is a lounge. As a designer, the design is always significant to me. I usually judge a place on if they take the time to make the restrooms special, and here, they've wallpapered them in comic books! The relax of the decor is simple, and understated. Drinks: They have an extensive cocktail menu. My usual favorite is the Mymosa, but I've been branching out and recently tried the Wild Boy. The flavors are interesting and the names are amusing too. Umm, they are strong too, so be prepared to be feeling incredible after 2 :)Food: I've never had their food, but they own a couple of options. I would probably nibble first before coming here, but I think I'm going to try their deviled eggs next : They close at 1amService: Everyone that works there seems
