San Francisco is packed with homo goodness
San Francisco. SF or SFO. Never San Fran and definitely not Frisco. The gayest municipality in America, as if you weren’t aware. What you may not know is the private of San Francisco: Everyone is a little gay. Everyone. Most of the city have gotten over the fact that some girls like girls and some boys like boys, sometimes two or three at a second. It’s the live-and-let-live temperament that makes the city so attractive. “Whatever man, it’s cool” should be the city motto.
You might be struck by the tiny size of the city. In its seven miles by seven miles, San Francisco’s residents own etched out more than neighborhoods. While the Castro remains dwelling for the homos, this one neighborhood should not define your experience. The whole city is lousy with men, women, and everything in between. Let your gaydar or dykedar adjust to the surroundings and follow the beeps and clicks coming from your loins.

For more than sixty years, San Francisco has been a beacon for LGBTQ people from all over the planet. But how did it achieve this role? The true story begins more than years before the rainbow flag or Harvey Milk. Hear the surprising story of how a parade of saloon owners, drag queens, sex workers, psychologists, hair fairies, Pentagon officials, and armed Evangelical activists together made San Francisco America’s "Gay Capital."
About Shawn Sprockett:
Shawn is a designer and senior adjunct professor in San Francisco, where he has lived for ten years. He has been studying lesser-known queer history in the city since and now runs a volunteer lgbtq+ history walking tour proposal called Unspeakable Vice, which highlights queer heroes, stories, and places beyond the Castro.

Many across the Combined States consider San Francisco to be a “Gay Mecca” due to its large gay people located primarily in the Castro District as well as the city’s relatively liberal attitude towards sex. Until the ’s, though, the Castro was largely a white functional class Irish neighborhood known as “Eureka Valley.” A move came during Planet War II, when many soldiers came to San Francisco and formed lgbtq+ relationships. These soldiers then stayed in the city after being discharged for homosexuality. In the s, Beat Customs erupted in San Francisco and notoriously rebelled against middle class values, thus aligning itself with homosexuality and helped bring gay identity to mainstream attention. In the mid to late s, groups such as the Daughters of Bilitis and the Mattachine Society were born, as good as the Tavern Guild, which was the first openly gay business association.
