Let’s be decent. Shorts programs can be rough.
Watch any omnibus production like Paris, je t’aime or To Each His Own Cinema and you’ll find that even some of our greatest filmmakers falter when presented with the short format. Shorts are really hard to do well. Even pleasant ones often hint at promise more than feeling complete.
And yet shorts programs are one of the most exciting corners of any film festival. It’s where new voices are experimenting and unleashing creativity that’s yearning to be seen. And so I watched just about every short at Newfest relevant to our interests and you can just see the ones that are truly special.

Best Gay Shorts [and Where to View Them]
There are so many gay-themed concise films out there, but many of them are a waste of second, either because the filmmaking is shoddy or the storytelling is dated. [That said, there are short films made shoddily that exceed their flaws and become camp. And there are dated films that get significant because they are great reflections of the times they were made in. So all these is attractive subjective, if you ask me.]
I decided to put together an alphabetical list of gay limited films I've loved/liked/appreciated for some reason, all of them at least I've ⭑⭑½-starred. [This rating is above average for me.]
For my purposes, this is a list of narrative/fictional concise films, but experimental short films are also included. However, to keep the list manageable, I've decided not to include short subject documentaries [with some special exceptions] and lesbian short films [also with one special exception]. I am also not including titles I've not seen, so this is cute much a curated list. [Suggestions, however, will be highly appreciated
There are so many incredible queer short films and movies ready, it was hard to slender them down to this shortlist.
Whilst there are more and more full-length gay films available (check out the Best Gay Movies on Netflix), historically these hold been few and far between which is why directors include often turned to gay brief films instead.
Many of these can easily be found on YouTube and you will notice a lot of common themes amongst them; coming out, bullying, smash ups and secret love to name a few. [no_toc]
What is a Gay Short Film?
A male lover short film is an imaginative motion picture with a running time of 40 minutes or less focusing on a topic relevant to the LGBTQ people or focusing an LGBTQ cast.
The challenge is to create a gripping, deep and meaningful storyline in a very short second – the gay short films in this shortlist certainly slap these markers.
