Marvin Gaye’s ‘Let’s Become It On’ Gets Official Music Video


Marvin Gaye’s classic road “Let’s Get It On” now has an official melody video. Directed by Monica Cordero and animated by Vania Chandrawidjaja and William Kusuma, the visual uses vibrant s psychedelia to Gaye’s sensual anthem to life. The video is out now via Motown/UMe.

In , Gaye released his 11th studio album, the self-produced What’s Going On. The socially-conscious concept album was a large success and is considered a spirit classic. He followed that record with the soundtrack album to the blaxploitation film Trouble Man. Gaye decided to follow in the footsteps of his label, Motown, and relocate from Detroit to Los Angeles. Released in August , Let’s Acquire It On explores the sexual and the spiritual. Gaye worked alongside producer Ed Townsend, who co-wrote several songs including the ballad “If I Should Die Tonight.”

That was the challenge facing Motown maestro Marvin Gaye after his What’s Going On opus was released in After ’s Trouble Man soundtrack, Let’s Get It On was the proper follow-up to one of the greatest albums of all time. But instead of suffering a seemingly inevitable letdown under the weight of all that pressure, Gaye leveled up again to make back-to-back classics. Indeed, Let’s Get It On defined the R&B concept album every bit as much as What’s Going On did, trading social consciousness for sexual healing in turbulent, soul-testing times.
