Think You Are Gay? It Shows in Your Eyes, According to Study

Aug. 6, &#; -- They state the eyes are window to the soul, and now scientists say the pupils can also expose a person's sexual orientation.

For the first time, researchers at Cornell University possess used a specialized infrared lens to measure pupillary changes while subjects watched erotic videos to settle which gender they initiate attractive.

The results of the study were published Aug. 3 in the scientific journal PLoS One.

In most cases, a person's stated sexual orientation equivalent the dilation of their pupils, which show signs of arousal. Previously, scientists used instruments to measure genital arousal, methods that were "too invasive."

Arousal or "interest" is associated with pupil dilation.

"The idea was to find an unconscious measure," said lead researcher and research fellow Gerulf Rieger. "We tried to find measures that were not so invasive, but reliable. The eye tracker infrared camera focuses on the eye while the person watches videos or pictures and me

A few weeks ago, the Washington Share reported that a group of Catholics in Colorado has spent millions of dollars digitally surveilling gay priests who use hookup apps. The group purchased publicly available information that is usually provided for marketers on ad exchanges. Then, they cross-referenced location data with the locations of seminaries and church residences. This grant them find phones that used apps like Grindr that were based in Catholic residences and, then, out the priests who used them.

This type of location tracking is common, as is the ability to obtain lists of people who include walked into a specific geographic area. Many apps route users' location and movements. They can do this with standard GPS location tracking, but also through what WiFi networks you combine to or where you check in on social media. This data is aggregated and used, most commonly, for geo-fenced advertising.
