New research sheds not heavy on the surprising ways dating apps are used for tourism
The academic paper by Dr Rachel Katz, Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the School of Health and Community at the University of Salford, challenges the idea that Grindr is used mainly for casual sex, instead emphasizing the ways that tourists use the app to earn information about the location they are visiting, from restaurant recommendations to developing a deeper cultural understanding of the place, sometimes with a view to moving there longer-term.
The study, based on research Rachel conducted as part of her PhD at the University of Manchester and published in the head digital research journal Social Media + Society, focusses on the social implications of Grindr utilize for gay tourism, tourist-local relationships, and digitally mediated social life.

Salford researchers find gay men accept digital dating as anxiety continues about the Covid pandemic
In the first of three #COVIDSEXLIVES surveys looking at engagement with general health messaging on dating apps during the pandemic among men who have sex with men, including men who identified as gay, bisexual and queer, researchers from four UK universities found 40% were anxious about what comes after so-called ‘Freedom Day,’ 20% were unsure how they felt, whilst 40% were not anxious and were instead ‘looking forward to getting back to normal.’
These men expressed anxieties around getting the virus, leaving their homes, and other people’s behaviour post-lockdown, mirroring anxieties expressed by the UK general public.
